Stoat Snippets provide the latest updates from the Orkney Native Wildlife Project.

January's data tells a similar story to what we saw in December. We're still seeing a low amount of stoat activity during the winter, however we are haven't slowed down in checking and deploying new traps.

We removed 106 stoats in January 2025, a drop on the same month in 2024. Although there was a drop in the number of stoats caught, we increased our trap checks and deployments - this could be a sign that as our network becomes more intense, the stoat population is declining.

North-West Mainland continues to catch the most stoats on the island, as they have done the past two months (December and November 2024). Our team in East-Mainland and the linked isles caught the least amount of stoats, but completed the most trap checks.

We would like to thank our community for their incredible effort and support, our volunteers, and the project team.
