We are thrilled that the Orkney Nature Festival is back in person this year. Join us at our events, and also celebrate with us the 30-year anniversary of EU life helping conservation and environment projects just like ours.

Protecting our native wildlife and how to do it Thursday 19 May

Come along and hear Chris Bell, our Biosecurity Officer, share his knowledge, experience and anecodotes on how to protect native wildlife from invasive non-native species. He first came to Orkney as a Papay Ranger early in his career and came back to his soul-home in Orkney after a spell working in biosecurity projects in New Zealand.

His lively talk takes place at 1900hrs at our ONWP office, Hatston, Kirkwall. He will share his expertise and explain how stoats can negatively affect our native wildlife, as well as explaining how we can all help to make sure Orkney can take steps to protect borders from other invasive non-native animals. Tickets are free but we ask to book to maintain social distancing precautions.

Book here for your free ticket.

Graemsay field trip tour Thursday 19 May

Also on Thursday 21 May we will be hosting a very special tour of Graemsay, one of the smallest of the Orkney isles. Your guide for this full-day field walk is Douggie Beaumont, assistant biosecurity officer, who checks the biosecurity routes regularly on the island.

Project open day celebrating native wildlife and EU Life anniversary Friday 20 May

After two years of Covid restrictions on meeting up and gathering we are delighted to be hosting our first project public open day since trapping began back in August 2019. Everyone is welcome just to drop by at any time from 1000hrs to 1500hrs at Mull Head Visitor Centre and experience hands on conservation and wildlife management with us – the world’s largest stoat eradication in a populated place.

We will be set up at the Mull Head visitor centre, thanks to the generosity of our partner Orkney Islands Council. So come rain or shine we will be open for business to anyone wanting to come along and find out more about us, what we do and how we are doing.

As it is over the Orkney Nature Festival weekend you could also take the opportunity for a nice walk along to the Gloop celebrating the magnificence of Orkney’s nature!

Dog Demos at 11:00hrs 12:30hrs and 14:00hrs.
